Seven Knights Against Fáfnir - Continuing Assault
Part Five of The Seven Knights of Princess Snow White
Hi!
This is Part Five of The Seven Knights of Princess Snow White - a seven-part story in The Red Riding Hood Saga.
If you missed it, here is Part Four: Seven Knights Against Fáfnir - Opening Strike. Or, you can start from the beginning at Part One: Caliburn.
Last time, Caliburn and her fellow knights started their assault on the dragon Fáfnir. Things were going according to plan - for time being, at least…
Part Five: Seven Knights Against Fáfnir - Continuing Assault
The morning sun continued to shine down upon us as we continued our battle with the dragon Fáfnir.
Durandal continued his assault, expertly attacking the dragon's legs and underside while weaving and dodging Fáfnir's attempts at crushing him.
Meanwhile, without Durandal's magic that allowed him to cut into the dragon's scales and hide, Galatine and I stayed back and unleashed our own magic at the dragon.
The water waves from my sword managed to slice into Fáfnir, while the orange flames from Galatine's sword still burned the dragon.
"You pests...," Fáfnir growled, "Enough!"
Its mighty wings began to beat, creating strong winds that halted our assault.
It began to lift up into the air, threatening an aerial attack.
"No!" I yelled out, "We have to stop it from flying!"
Suddenly, the mighty Fáfnir roared out in pain.
I searched for the cause and found Gram - they had climbed onto the dragon's back!
Pulling their blade free from Fáfnir's right wing, Gram lifted their sword above their head...
And yelled out a battle cry before bringing down their giant blade onto the dragon's wing once more!
Fáfnir roared in pain again, as Gram's magically-enhanced strength and giant sword sliced into its wing.
"Puny dwarf," it roared, turning its head towards the knight on its wing, "you think that will stop me?!"
Through its pain, Fáfnir managed to continue beating its mighty wings, lifting itself higher into the air...
Then, with a smirk, it stopped.
Plummeting back down, it stomped into the ground, causing an earthquake that knocked us off balance.
Then, it quickly lifted up a front claw and brought that claw down at Durandal.
Durandal, rolling out of the way, barely managed to dodge the dragon's claw stomping into the ground next to him.
Fáfnir growled and swatted the knight away with its other front claw.
"Durandal!" I called out, as he crashed into the ground.
With a snarl, the dragon turned towards me.
But then, something caught its attention, and Fáfnir turned to the watchtower.
"A light?" I heard the dragon say, as it looked at the tower.
"Ah," Fáfnir said, "there you are!"
"No!" I yelled out, as the dragon charged at the watchtower.
Ascalon's shadow of the red dragon appeared and unleashed its breath of fire at Fáfnir.
But the dragon charged straight through, seemingly not caring about the pain from the heat and the flames.
I saw a flash of light from the watchtower.
But, it was too late.
Fáfnir slammed into the watchtower just as Joyeuse fired his beam of light.
Now errant, the cone of radiance went wild as the watchtower crumbled and fell.
"Joyeuse! Ascalon!" I yelled.
But the beam of light disappeared and the red dragon's shadow scattered into embers - the fates of their wielders unknown.
I watched in shock as the rubble and the debris of the watchtower settled.
Growling, Fáfnir shook off the wreckage that had landed on it.
Turning back towards us, it began to approach.
Galatine and I readied our swords, as Durandal struggled to get up and join us.
"Interesting, dwarfs," Fáfnir said, as it walked towards us, "that you would fight so hard to defend a human city."
"As children of the earth," it continued, "do you not find this place an offence?!"
Suddenly, a dwarfen knight came out of the surrounding buildings and ran out in front of Fáfnir.
The dragon stopped and looked down at the knight in its path.
"Accursed dragon!" the knight yelled, "I shall end you with my cursed sword!"
It was Dáinsleif - he had finally found the chance to get close enough to the dragon!
Drawing his sword, Dáinsleif allowed the curse to overtake him.
Then, as if guided by an invisible force, Dáinsleif shot up into the air, sword aimed at the dragon's chest.
Would the curse allow the blade to pierce through?
I watched as Dáinsleif reached the dragon...
And the sword pierced into Fáfnir's chest, causing it to gurgle in pain!
The dragon staggered back, with Dáinsleif dangling on its chest.
Had the curse worked? Did the blade reached the dragon's heart? Would this be the dragon's death?
We watched Dáinsleif closely, trying to see what was happening.
Then, a claw came and swatted him away.
In shock, we watched as Dáinsleif crashed into the rubble of a destroyed building.
Derisively, Fáfnir laughed at us.
"Foolish dwarfs, your curses mean nothing to me!"
