I really enjoyed this! I teach the ballad of Mulan to my 7th graders along with an article about archaelogical evidence found of female soldiers in that time. They then decide if that believe Mulan was a real person or not. It was so fun to read your interpretation. This is my first story on Red's saga. I'll have to go back and read the others.

Thank you - I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! 😄

That's quite cool that you teach the Ballad of Mulan to your 7th graders!

If I may ask, which translation (I'm assuming that you teach in English, though I could be wrong 😅) do you use?

And I would love to see that article as well, if it isn't any trouble!

I go back to work on Monday, I'll send them to you. I'm curious now too! I don't know off the top of my head.

Yes, it's an English. I am not familiar with any Chinese language unfortunately. Maybe that'll be a next language when I reach fluency in Spanish, whenever that will be 😅

Thank you - that is much appreciated! 😄

I read the Ballad in both Chinese and English for my research, and the English translations that I found were either too rigid or were too inaccurate for my liking - so I'm hoping to find a better one! (I do know Chinese [Cantonese], but having English be my primary language for over 20 years means that it's just sometimes easier to have a translation nearby - especially for things that are older and more poetic. 😅)

Oooh, good luck learning Spanish!

I'm learning Japanese myself right now, and learning a new language can be hard!

This was so good! A really unique and fascinating take on these characters. I'm not a big Disney fan but I always loved Mulan. It was so interesting to read something that involves Chinese folklore too. I need to read more stories about Chinese history and folklore because it's so interesting to learn about. Your stories kind of remind me of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer - taking popular characters from fairy tales and folklore and doing something fresh and interesting with them. That's what I really like about reimaginings. It's fun to take a story or a character that is well-known and making them your own.
