Thoughts: Another Journey to the West
First of all, as promised, a new Stories Archive page!
It’s by no means a complete archive of my writings (for that, you’ll have to go here), but it’ll do for keeping track of what’s currently on this Substack.
Currently, I’m working on the next Retelling Myths, which is set to be the last one for a little while.
But, more on that after I get it done. 😅
As for the story itself, it’ll be my second short story based on Journey to the West.
Which I think is a good way to cap off the series for the time being, since the very first Retelling Myths was also based on Journey to the West.
For this story, I wanted to encapsulate both the action-adventure nature and the episodic nature of the original.
So, instead of just retelling one story from the book or doing a vignette like I did with the first story, I decided to create an episode that mixes several different parts together along with some original parts, with the story involving the Bull Demon King as the base.
As part of my research for writing this story, I came across this: a TV adaptation of Journey to the West from the 80’s!
All legally uploaded to YouTube, with both Chinese and English subtitles!
And so, to help with my research, I watched episodes 10, 11, 14, and 17.
10 deals with the White Bone Demon, 11 deals with the Yellow Robe Demon (as well as wrapping up a leftover plotline from 10), 14 deals with Red Boy, and 17 adapts the Bull Demon King story (which is one of the most well-known stories from Journey to the West).
Hopefully, I didn’t give away too much there… 😅
Anyways, back to writing.
Hopefully, you will enjoy the results when the story comes out! 😄
See you in two Mondays!
