Thoughts: On Comics (and New Mediums)
I was watching the last few episodes of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean (season 5 of the anime, which adapts Part 6 of the manga), when I started thinking about the medium of comics (as well as animation).
More specifically, I was thinking about how manga (and comics, in general) couldn’t have existed without the invention of the printing press (as well as a ton of improvements to printing technology after that).
And then I looked into a bit more, and found something called “moveable type” before the printing press, and then I found that there was woodblock printing before that.
And, of course, sequential art existed long before as well.
So, to think, all of that had to come together to give birth to a relatively new medium in human history - comics.
And that’s not even mentioning everything else that had to come together to bring forth animation as a medium.
I don’t really have a point to all this - as I’ve said before, these Thoughts posts are supposed to be nice and short, and just something interesting (and tangentially related to writing) that came up while I work on the next Retelling Myths.
But, to think, that an entirely new medium was birthed by the accumulation of human history, arts, technology, and who-knows-what-else.
And the new mediums that will be born after us.
What a Wonderful World.
(Yes, that last line was definitely a Jojo reference [+ a reference to the actual song, of course]! 😅😆)
